If you’re like me, you laugh whenever you see an ad for a car that proclaims all of its mileage is ‘highway miles’. Because yeah, highway miles are easy...nobody wants a car with 200k miles that were hard as hell. Which I guess makes this ad a bit refreshing.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

130,000 city miles. Highway? Nah bro, never heard of a highway. These are streetwise, city miles...not your rube bumpkin country highway miles.

I’ve never understood this. So instead of hitting potholes around 10-30mph, you’re hitting them at 60+? Instead of a few scratches and maybe a bump or two, you have rock chips everywhere, road tar, road rash, and an engine that gets run at a single rpm range all day?

I’d rather take the car that lived in the city.

I think they both have their merits. Zipping along on the highway is easier on brakes, but you're turning a ton of revs the whole time...I like to see a mix myself.

It’s especially nice when it’s the third/fourth owner of a 225,000 mile/20 year old car who is proclaiming that it’s all “highway miles”.

And how would you know what the other two or three owners did with it?

A few reasons:

1. It’s easier on a reciprocating-piston engine to run at a constant (or narrow range) rpm than it is to be moving up and down all the time. One of the reasons why constant speed props on airplanes exist.

2. Far less load is placed on the entire driveline when accelerating or braking on the highway than starting and stopping in town.

3. A pothole that would be very uncomfortable at 10-30 mph could go unnoticed at 60, as the suspension doesn’t react fast enough to drop all the way in before hitting the other side. Therefore, it’s like hitting a much smaller bump. This also goes for railway tracks at the top of a crest. If it’s a bad one it’s often better to speed up than to brake. And just as you feel less of a jolt, so do all the components that the bumps might hurt.

Mostly though it’s the fact that highway driving is smoother. There’s a reason highway MPG’s are always higher. It’s just easier on the car in general.

That’s practically city driving though.
